Ah, Delhi. The city where the air is thick with pollution, and apparently, political tensions are just as dense. This past Saturday, the capital witnessed a protest organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)—and no, that’s not a new trendy restaurant. They were out in full force against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, who apparently has some explaining to do regarding the alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Sounds serious, right? Well, buckle up because it gets wilder.

In a classic case of ‘let’s take this to the next level,’ the Delhi Police decided to register a whopping 20 FIRs following the protest. Yes, you heard that right—twenty! That’s more than the number of times I’ve tried to get my cat to stop knocking things off the table. Among these FIRs was one from the Kamla Market police station, where four gentlemen (and I use the term loosely) linked to the right-wing Hindu Raksha Dal were arrested. Their alleged crimes? Assaulting students and manhandling women. Because nothing says ‘I stand for my beliefs’ quite like a good old-fashioned brawl.

Now, if you thought the drama ended there, think again! The charges don’t stop at just the assault on civilians. Oh no, that would be too simple. The police also slapped on charges of assaulting their personnel. Yes, because when you’re protesting, what better way to make your point than by giving the police a bit of a workout? I mean, who needs a gym membership when you can just tussle with the cops on the streets of Delhi?

And let’s not forget about the obstruction charges. Apparently, in the heat of the moment, some protesters decided that blocking traffic was a great way to express their dissatisfaction. I can only imagine the confused looks on the faces of the people just trying to get to work or, more importantly, to their favorite chai stall. You know, priorities.

This whole situation raises a lot of questions, like how did we get here? Was there a group chat that went wrong? Did someone misinterpret the term ‘peaceful protest’? It’s all very mysterious. But one thing is clear: the protests are a symptom of a larger issue regarding electoral integrity in India, and people are fired up about it. And when people get fired up, well, let’s just say it can turn into a fiery mess pretty quickly.

So, what’s next for the CJP and the beleaguered Chief Election Commissioner? Will there be more protests? More FIRs? A reality TV show featuring the top protestors? (I’d watch that.) Only time will tell. But for now, it’s safe to say that the streets of Delhi are anything but dull. Stay tuned, folks—this political soap opera is just getting started!
