In a move that’s sure to send ripples through the world of education (or at least a polite nod of approval), Mandeep K Bhandari has been officially appointed as the new chairman of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). Yes, you heard that right! The 2001-batch IAS officer is stepping into the big shoes left by Lokhande Prashant Sitaraman, who has undoubtedly left a legacy of his own (and perhaps a few unanswered emails).
Now, what’s the deal with this appointment? Well, it seems that the powers that be decided that Bhandari’s extensive experience, particularly from his stints in Jammu and Kashmir and various roles in the central government, makes him the perfect candidate to tackle the current storm brewing around the board’s On-Screen Marking (OSM) system for Class 12 evaluations. If you’re wondering what OSM is, let’s just say it’s a fancy way of saying they’re trying to make marking papers a tad less chaotic, which is something we can all get behind.
But let’s not kid ourselves; this doesn’t mean it’s all sunshine and rainbows. Bhandari is walking into a bit of a minefield here. The implementation of the OSM system has been under scrutiny, and it’s not like he can just wave a magic wand and make all the problems disappear. If only it were that simple, right? But hey, he’s got the title of additional secretary now, so he’s got a few extra letters after his name. That’s got to count for something!
With the educational landscape changing faster than you can say ‘new syllabus,’ Bhandari’s role will undoubtedly come with its share of challenges.
