Economic Growth Takes a Nap: August Edition

Services rose 3.6% and industry 3.5% from a year earlier, while farming and mining fell 2.6%. The figures are unadjusted and come from INEGI via EFE.

Well, folks, it seems like the economy decided to hit the snooze button for the second month in a row. According to Statistics Canada (or StatCan, as the cool kids call it), our beloved economy came to a grinding halt in August. So, if you were hoping to hear some good news about economic growth, you might want to grab a snack and settle in for some mildly disappointing news.

Now, let’s break this down. StatCan reported that the real gross domestic product (GDP) was essentially unchanged in August. In layman’s terms, that means it was like a car stuck in neutral—revving the engine but going absolutely nowhere. Can we get a collective sigh here?

What’s behind this stall, you ask? Well, apparently, the public sector and wholesale trade decided to take a vacation. Yes, while we were all busy sipping our lattes and scrolling through social media, the economy’s key players were off lounging on a beach somewhere. Who knew the public sector had such a penchant for tropical getaways?

On the bright side, retail trade saw a bit of a rebound, which is like finding a dollar in your pocket after doing laundry. It more than offset a decline in July, so it’s not all doom and gloom. But let’s be honest: if retail trade had a personality, it would be the friend who always bails you out of trouble but also seems to be the only one putting in any effort.

Manufacturing output has also been feeling a bit under the weather. It’s like that one friend who keeps saying, ‘I’m fine!’ while clearly needing a nap. So, as you can see, the economy is experiencing a bit of a collective malaise.

In summary, while August might have been a snooze-fest for economic growth, we can only hope that September brings some much-needed pep in its step. Fingers crossed that the public sector and wholesale trade return from their vacation refreshed and ready to contribute. Until then, let’s keep our spirits up and maybe invest in some board games—because it looks like we might have some time on our hands while the economy takes a little longer to wake up.
