Fiji’s Pre-COP Meeting: Where Are All the Leaders?

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will travel to Fiji and Tuvalu from 5 to 7 October 2026 for the Pre-COP Leaders’ event. At COP30, Australia secured the role of COP31 President of Negotiations and agreement to deliver a Pacific-hosted Pre-COP, including a special Leaders’ event.

So, here we are. Fiji, a tropical paradise known for its stunning beaches, vibrant culture, and now, apparently, a pre-COP meeting that has the climate world buzzing—or maybe just whispering. With the UN climate conference looming next month, you’d think all the world leaders would be clamoring to attend this crucial gathering. But alas, only two leaders from outside the Pacific region have decided to grace us with their presence. Talk about a guest list that could use a little sprucing up!

Hosted by none other than Australia, Fiji, and Tuvalu, this pre-COP meeting is not just a casual get-together over piña coladas. It’s an event with a price tag that exceeds $20 million! Yes, you heard that right. Twenty million dollars! For that kind of cash, I would expect at least a few more leaders to show up, maybe even some celebrity climate advocates. Where’s Leonardo DiCaprio when you need him?

Australian Climate Minister Chris Bowen has stated that the purpose of these talks is to shine a spotlight on the threats facing the Pacific region while also addressing the domestic economic pressures that many countries are grappling with. It’s a noble aim, but let’s be real: it seems a bit like trying to sell ice to Eskimos when only two people are paying attention from the outside.

Now, one might wonder, what are these two leaders doing here? Are they the valiant knights of climate action, charging in to save the day? Or is it more like they just happened to be in the neighborhood and thought, ‘Why not drop by Fiji for a meeting that could use a little more pizzazz?’

The absence of leaders from other regions raises some eyebrows. Are they busy? Did they forget to pack their sunscreen? Or perhaps they’re waiting for a more glamorous invitation—like a UN climate gala with red carpets and a buffet of organic canapés.

It’s also worth noting that this meeting comes at a time when the Pacific is facing dire climate threats, including rising sea levels and extreme weather events. So, while the global focus is crucial, the lack of attendance from other leaders could be interpreted as a lack of commitment. Or maybe they’re all just really bad at managing their calendars.

In any case, as the pre-COP meeting unfolds, we can only hope that the discussions lead to meaningful action. Because let’s face it, at the end of the day, we all want a planet that isn’t on fire—or underwater. So, here’s to Fiji, the two brave leaders, and the hope that the world will eventually realize that climate change isn’t just a Pacific problem; it’s a global issue that requires a global response.

So, if you’re a leader reading this from the comfort of your home (which you probably are), maybe consider hopping on a plane to Fiji. It might just be the best decision you make this year. Plus, who can resist a good meeting in paradise? Just remember to bring your sunscreen!
