The world of Hollywood has lost a true legend. Dick Guttman, the publicist who helped shape the careers of some of the biggest names in the industry, passed away on September 19 at the ripe old age of 93. Now, before you start thinking that 93 sounds like a good age to start taking up knitting or gardening, let’s take a moment to appreciate the incredible life Guttman led.
Born in St. Louis, Guttman made the leap to Los Angeles after World War II, presumably thinking that the sun and palm trees would be a much better backdrop than the Midwest. And boy, was he right! He kicked off his career at the well-known firm Rogers & Cowan, where he honed his skills and developed a knack for making stars shine just a little brighter.
Over the years, Guttman represented an impressive roster of celebrities, including the likes of Barbra Streisand, Clint Eastwood, and Paul Newman. You know, just your average Tuesday at the office! When you’re working with such heavyweights, it’s probably a good idea to keep a strong supply of coffee and a stockpile of patience.
Guttman was known for his unique ability to navigate the often chaotic waters of Hollywood. He had a way of making sure his clients were always in the right spotlight at the right time. It’s almost like he had a sixth sense for publicity—perhaps he was part wizard? Okay, that’s a stretch, but you catch my drift.
